Traffic Signal Maintenance Program

City of Houston, TX

The City of Houston, TX (City) is the largest city in the United States by total geographic area, covering more than 630 square miles. It is also the most populous city in the State of Texas. Houston has a long history of being home to many globally strategic industries, including energy (petroleum and natural gas), biomedical research, software, and aeronautics – home of NASA’s Johnson Space Center. The City has built a highway network that contains more than 2,500 traffic signals over 16,000 lane miles within its roadway infrastructure.

The City’s Transportation and Drainage Operations Division, part of its Public Works Department, oversees this vast roadway network. To assist with maintaining the traffic signal network at an optimum level of operation, the City awarded Econolite with the traffic signal maintenance contract to perform preventative, reactive, and improvement related services and materials for projects that can be both reoccurring and unplanned for three years with an optional fourth year.

Econolite will provide both preventative and reactive maintenance on deployed traffic control and related devices to mitigate the risks of component failure, as well as repair traffic devices that have failed. In addition, we are providing alterations or upgrades, including safety and operational improvements to devices and the roadway. Econolite is responsible for the City’s entire roadway traffic signals, pedestrian signals, detection sensors, traffic controllers and cabinets, Battery Backup Systems (BBS), roadway signage, including Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, highway lighting, traffic control beacons, and power systems for the city’s deployed traffic control systems and related components.
