Town of Los Gatos, CA
In 2016, the Town of Los Gatos identified the need for a traffic signal system upgrade and completed an inventory of existing equipment. The Town built up project funding and secured grants including federal funds through the Innovative Deployments to Enhance Arterials (IDEA) program administered by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC).
In May 2020, as part of Project 1, the Town contracted with Econolite Systems, Inc. (ESI) to provide the following enhancements at 31 of the Town’s signalized intersections:
- Replacement of the existing traffic signal controller units with Econolite’s Cobalt® Advanced Traffic Controllers (ATC) with EOS Controller software
- High-resolution data is necessary for ATSPM and ATSC operations.
- Includes features necessary for signal priority – in this case, for bicycle signal priority, but available for all forms of signal priority
- Furnish and install Ethernet switches
- Installation of Centracs® ATMS, Econolite’s Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS)
- Installation of Centracs Edaptive, Econolite’s Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS)
In June of 2021, the Town required the deployment of a Virtual Bicycle Detection/Bicycle Priority System (VBD/BPS) to improve cyclist mobility and safety (Project 2a) and Advanced Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM) at the signalized intersections (Project 2b). The Town contracted with ESI to furnish, install, and integrate Centracs SPM, Econolite’s ATSPM solution, ultimately providing signal optimization and actionable information for all of the Town’s 31 signalized intersections. For both projects, ESI provided Town staff with system setup, operation, and maintenance training, as well as ongoing system support.
