San Mateo County Smart Corridor Field Device Maintenance Services

City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County

In 2022, Econolite Systems, Inc. (ESI) was selected to provide field device maintenance and preventative maintenance services along the San Mateo County Smart Corridor, which is composed of several key freeway-centric arterial corridors in San Mateo County that parallel US 101 and SR-280 freeways. The City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County (C/CAG) contracted the services of ESI, which has been providing similar field device maintenance services to C/CAG, San Mateo County, the City of Sunnyvale, the City of Pacifica, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), the Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA), and the Bay Area Infrastructure Finance Authority (BAIFA).

The C/CAG Smart Corridor implements Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment, including directional signs, Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, arterial Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), vehicle detector stations, and Center-to-Center (C2C) communications during these incidents and events, allowing the stakeholders to proactively manage traffic by efficiently directing traffic through arterial streets and bringing them back to the freeway, past and beyond the incident area.

ESI is providing on-call ITS field device corrective maintenance, including all unscheduled tasks necessary to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair malfunctions and failures of ITS devices and traffic control equipment, due to weather-related incidents, wire theft or vandalism, knockdowns, communication outages, and power outages. ESI is also tasked with replacing and restoring non-operable equipment and devices for the ITS network and infrastructure located within the cities’ right-of-way.

In addition, ESI established and implemented a routine preventative maintenance program to keep all ITS devices and communications equipment operational and reports any unusual or anomalous findings made while performing routine maintenance or makes recommendations for corrections to the devices that frequently require routine maintenance. ESI also performs ITS upgrades as part of the C/CAG Smart Corridor’s ongoing program objectives and performance goals.
