San Fran Express Lane

Toll System Communications Installation, Integration, and Testing, San Francisco Bay Area, CA

Jun 28, 2023 | ITS Integration

Bay Area Infrastructure Finance Authority (BAIFA)

ESI was responsible for the installation, deployment, and testing of the Express Lanes Fiber Optic Communications Network of a 32-mile, 10-gigabit fiber optic-based carrier-grade backhaul network for Interstate 680 (I-680) toll lane data. This project consisted of over 40 miles of fiber optic cable, 10 miles of conduit, and the installation of three network/ switching hubs (each with battery backup). Server rooms were installed at three locations: the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) D4 Headquarters in Oakland, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) headquarters in San Francisco, and the Benicia Toll Plaza. Server room installation included the supply, installation, and integration of Layer-3 switches, and backups systems to serve the toll information. Once the physical network was constructed, ESI installed Solarwinds for network management and monitoring and Palo Alto Firewalls for network security were configured. The network is built for 10GB backhaul and triple redundancy for the transmission of toll information to BAIFA headquarters.

ESI also coordinated with Caltrans on scheduling Right-of-Way (ROW) access for installation efforts and managed multiple subcontractors along with a field staff of eight technicians. ESI maintained the CPM schedule for the project and was involved with weekly reporting to all stakeholders. Along with field efforts, ESI also assisted in developing and implementing the backhaul field network that consists of Cisco routers and switches along with a network management system that provided real-time status of network traffic and alerting.

ESI managed the construction and deployment of the backhaul network, as well as coordinated with Caltrans on scheduling Right-of-Way (ROW) access for installation efforts, and managed multiple subcontractors along with a field staff of eight technicians. ESI developed and implemented the backhaul field network that consists of Cisco routers and switches along with a network management system that provided real-time status of network traffic and alerting. This included procuring, configuration, deployment, and testing of Cisco routers and switches along with a high availability system to provide network monitoring.
