Reducing traffic congestion and improving decision-making in complex traffic conditions are major challenges. Current systems, while advanced, mainly react to issues as they arise rather than predicting them. To achieve substantial progress towards Vision Zero—reducing traffic fatalities and injuries to zero—there is a need for breakthrough solutions.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a game-changer, offering predictive analytics and real-time adjustments to enhance safety and traffic management. AI-driven applications combine data from various sources, including traffic, weather, and incidents, to forecast and mitigate risks proactively. This technology enables smarter traffic signal control and efficient incident response, moving from reactive to proactive management.

Ongoing advancements in AI, along with improved hardware and software, are transforming traffic management. By leveraging AI in conjunction with historical and real-time data, we can anticipate problems before they occur, optimize roadways, and enhance safety for all users, including vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists. Municipalities that adopt these technologies will see significant benefits in traffic operations and sustainable mobility.
