The City of Mission Viejo (City) is located about 50 miles south of Los Angeles, CA in the Saddleback Valley of southern Orange County. Named the safest city in the US in 2007 by Morgan Quitno Press, Mission Viejo is mostly residential, and suburban in nature and culture with a comprehensive mobility mix of urban-level commercial, vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic. The City covers approximately 18 square miles (46.6 square km), but its population just exceeds 100,000.
In November 2023, the City Council on gave the green light to a citywide project that will enhance pedestrian safety as part of a Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) Grant that it secured to improve pedestrian safety at crosswalks throughout the City. In December 2023, Econolite Systems (ESI) was awarded the contract to upgrade the City’s intersection infrastructure by furnishing and installing 152 new Audible Pedestrian Signal (APS) push button call systems, as well as 24 new Central Control Units (CCU).
In addition to removing the outdated existing pedestrian signal equipment and installing the APS call systems at each upgraded intersection, ESI will be responsible for ensuring the appropriate pedestrian appurtenance, complying with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards and requirements. Installation of the APS pushbutton systems along with the controller upgrades at various locations throughout the City ensures proper integration with all traffic signal operations, including preemption and emergency signal programming for safer mobility.
