City of San Jose, CA
Through its long-term commitment and preparation for a Smart City future, the City of San Jose (City) planned for an upgrade to its traffic signal infrastructure, which included an Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM) system. Econolite Systems, Inc. (ESI) was selected to design and implement an ATSPM solution that leveraged existing traffic control and communications infrastructure to deliver objective, cutting-edge, traffic signal performance analytics. The goal was to provide City staff with a turnkey system to easily monitor traffic signal performance, prioritize signal retiming efforts, and efficiently manage the City’s infrastructure using in-house resources.
ESI deployed Centracs® SPM, Econolite’s proven Signal Performance Measures system. Centracs SPM leveraged the existing 2070 ATC controllers equipped with Fourth Dimension D4 Firmware and provided cost-effective reliable performance metrics at all 100 project intersections. The Centracs SPM system integrated with the City’s existing traffic infrastructure, including detection systems, communications, data storage, and software, to operate as a seamless and cohesive system. ESI’s Centracs SPM solution also ensured that the following project objectives were met:
- Utilize existing, end-to-end operational, IP-based communications (Ethernet-over-copper network) as a data pathway to the Centracs SPM cloud
- Controller elements seamlessly integrate high-resolution data from existing 2070 ATC controllers into Centracs SPM, including bicycle metrics.
- Deliver, install, integrate, test, and train City staff on the new Centracs SPM system
- Maintain ongoing local support, system performance monitoring, and training resources for the City of San Jose
In addition, the Centracs SPM is providing the City with a robust and flexible ATSPM solution capable of accommodating the City’s plans for a future hybrid video/radar detection system for stop-bar/advance detection.
